Lovers of Liberty: Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir
Les Amants de la Liberté, The Lovers of Liberty, The adventure of Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir in the XXth Century, Editions 1, Paris 1999 and collection de poche, pocket book J’ai Lu n°6133.
Claudine Monteil was lucky to befriend with the two giants of French literature of the XXth century, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir. She recalls the link stronger than marriage that united the two lovers, writing, and a necessary but demanding way of breathing. Writing is their oxygen with the goal of serving freedom.
« Les Amants de la Liberté » (« The Lovers of Liberty ») tell the commitment and the anxieties of two writers immerged in the realities of the World and fighting against injustice and, ahead of time, for human rights, at the risk of their own lives: World War II, the support of the Algerian War of Independence, their support for the independence groups of the French colonies, their participation in the Russel tribunal against the Vietnam War, their support to the May 1968 student rebellion and movements, and to the women’s cause through the French Women’s Liberation Movement.
Ignoring the insults and physical threats Sartre and Beauvoir remain loyal to their ideas until their last day. They left behind them a deep influence which still inspires men and women who are facing the hard times and the questions of the XXIrst Century.
Their story is also a love story. Because she knew them personally, Claudine Monteil describes day by day, in their intimacy, without forgetting the problems the couple faced, thanks also to testimonies from their families. The book reads like an historical novel which explains us witch problems we are now facing in the world.
The book is available in French, Portuguese, Greek, Swedish, Chinese, Rumanian, Turkish, and Japanese (for details about the names of the publishers, please see CV). You can order in it in a bookstore, or on Amazon.com, Fnac.com, and Chapitre.com or at the publishers. If you need more help, you may send a message to Claudine Monteil.
